As inhabitants of the V̸̤͔́̋́͑͛̌̒̕͝͝o̸̒̄̾̿̇̈́̿̒̈́̄͝͠i̸̢̛̤̜̟̅̽̾̓̿̓̕͘͘͝d̵̛̛̛̻̍́̓̏̒͋́̅̏͑̌̐̂͘ , these creatures are often considered (by the Organization) to be manifestations of fear itself, created by the fixations of living things in the Waking World. Oddly enough, living things in the Waking World are likewise thought to be manifestations of what V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ inhabitants fixate on. Most creatures of the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ are believed to want nothing more than to torment, break, or be humans.
Surely nothing is so black and white (even if the naturally occurring realm of the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̍͝D is naturally devoid of all colors but black, white, and the grays that lie in-between).
In the broadest sense, V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ Dwellers are classified by the Org as Eaters, Breakers, and Hijackers based on what they aim to do with Waking World souls. Every entity is unique in how it thinks and what it wants, but the V̸̤͔́̋́͑͛̌̒̕͝͝o̸̒̄̾̿̇̈́̿̒̈́̄͝͠i̸̢̛̤̜̟̅̽̾̓̿̓̕͘͘͝d̵̛̛̛̻̍́̓̏̒͋́̅̏͑̌̐̂͘ does not give its Dwellers souls.
Souls from any other dimension will suffice for Dwellers to leave their dimension. Note that a Hijacker that manages to successfully hijack a soul for itself transitions into a cryptid. Humanoid souls are the easiest to hijack, but the process is difficult nonetheless for most Dwellers.
Choice of Classification
If a human from any dimension aims to survive in the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚, it’s crucial to know what an inhabitant would do with their soul. Elaborations on the Org’s three main subsets follow.
Eaters
Very rarely are Eaters equipped with the mental faculties to do more than devour. They are the only members of the realm that will try to eat other V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ Dwellers, or even themselves, for the sake of sustaining their bodies. The most cognitive Eaters, however, may rationalize their want to devour as a spiritual practice, claiming that consuming a Waking World soul is the only way to reach an enlightened state of being, becoming more than they or Waking World inhabitants or even cryptids could ever be on their own. However, it’s worth noting that successful soul consumption is unheard of; souls merely break instead.
Breakers
Breakers are perhaps the rarest V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ Dwellers there are, as breaking and destroying a soul strikes much of the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ as wasteful. Breakers tend to despise the Waking World as one in the Waking World may despise having nightmares. They will only approach a dimensional rift to kill unwanted interlopers. They may take pleasure in torturing their targets before drawing out their deaths, and enjoy keeping corpses as trophies.
Hijackers
Many higher-functioning members of the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ are Hijackers, as Hijackers understand that the easiest way out of their dimension is through taking an existent soul from another reality and harboring it in the core of their being. These V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ Dwellers are typically known for being the least aggressive, but make no mistake: all are insistent on acquiring a soul, and should be seen as the largest threat of the three V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚ Dweller classifications.
Considerations
V̸̤͔́̋́͑͛̌̒̕͝͝o̸̒̄̾̿̇̈́̿̒̈́̄͝͠i̸̢̛̤̜̟̅̽̾̓̿̓̕͘͘͝d̵̛̛̛̻̍́̓̏̒͋́̅̏͑̌̐̂͘ Dwellers are:
- Undying unless consumed… or, if one is a Domain Runner presiding over a region of the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚, its “Key Fixation” (often an object that functions as the “heart” of their Domain) is destroyed.
- Capable of merging with one another via consumption.
- Susceptible to the violent impulses of their parasitic realm.
- Capable of speaking to humans in the V̵̳̮̇o̷̳̬͗i̵̖̺̍͝d̵̠̋̚, but mainly through transmitted thoughts (such as streams of consciousness or visions).
